Thomas Slinger, better known as Gemini, is an upcoming British musician who is a pioneer in breaking the stereotypical sound of the dubstep genre though constant experimentation with futuristic synths and original patterns. Gemini’s tracks manage to contain a smooth and emotional build-up that echoes the aggressiveness of his phenomenal drops. Thomas Slinger’s skills as a piano player and background in classical music are prominent in every single song as he maintains a logical structure and flowing melody in a genre that is known for being chaotic and disorderly. Also, he never smiles; that’s how serious he takes his work. “Fire Inside” is Gemini’s latest EP, containing 4 astounding tracks ranging in mood and style. Read on for the full breakdown.

Fire Inside (feat. Greta Svabo Bech)

The title track proves a strong start and a definite highlight of the EP. “Fire Inside” is most similar to Gemini’s style, comprising of a smooth build-up and a hard-hitting drop. The gentle vocals of Greta Svabo Bech integrate well with the track and the sickest synth ever is featured at the 2 minute mark. “Fire Inside” is a standard Gemini piece of work, maintaining a high level of production, but is nothing out of the ordinary for the young producer.

No Way Out

“No Way Out” is similar in style to the previous track, but focuses more on the melody and setting a brighter tone for the EP. It’s definitely interesting in terms of the choice of sounds, especially prominent in the build-up. If you liked “Fire Inside”, you’ll definitely enjoy “No Way Out”.

To The World

In a sudden turn of events, Gemini takes a much harsher approach towards “To The World”, all while very different from his usual works. First off, the use of male vocals is uncommon, but a wise choice. While i still haven’t decided whether I approve of the chainsaw/landmower madness drop, it is definitely something new and original that perhaps Gemini tried to experiment with in “To The World”. For those who like it rough… this track is for you.

Nothingness

Compared to the previous track, “Nothingness” is located on the opposite side of the intensity spectrum. It is the calmest, yet the most ominous-sounding of them all, as Gemini includes a ghost-like chorus, eerie strings and echoes of single piano notes and fading chords. As the title explains it, nothing really happens in the song, and, before you know it, it has already ended. Because “Nothingness” is very unique, you have to be in the right mood for it in order to appreciate it. Don’t expect to be blown away like in every other track of the EP. Perfect for a rainy day.

.

Final Verdict

Gemini is known for his consistency in the quality of his productions, which is evidenced in the “Fire Inside” EP. “Fire Inside” and “No Way Out” are standard Gemini tracks: good, but nothing out of the ordinary, while “To The World” and “Nothingness” were experimentals and very unique, so they were either a hit or miss depending on your taste and mood. Overall the EP is satisfying and a good presentation of Gemini’s talents, earning him 4/5 Epic Bass Heads.
